Nara is so small and compact, you could walk around with no problem and see most of the major sites. Lots of places will rent bikes which is a great way to see Nara on a nice day.
to see:
Todaiji Temple - inside is a bronze Buddha statue 49 feet tall. There's also a pillar that's cut out at the bottom inside the temple. It represents the Buddha's nostril and if you can crawl through it, you can gain enlightenment. On the way to the temple, pass through Nara Park but beware of the deer - they're everywhere.
Tenri in the Nara Basin. Here you can see Kofun, the old, key-shaped burial tombs of the 10th Emperor. Not as exciting as you might think. Kind of like standing on a big hill. You can only see the shape from the air. Here`s someone else`s account of seeing Tenri - he was lucky enough to go in one! http://www.pbase.com/wisefrog/arcfeb5kofun
If you are familiar with the Tale of Genji you might want to take a visit to Isonokami Jingu. http://www.taleofgenji.org/isonokami.html
