The area to check out in Fukuoka City is Tenjin. There's a subway stop with the same name so it's easy to find. Tenjin is where all the nightlife is, it's full of cool places to eat and party, and is pretty compact so it's easy to find your way around. Nishi-Dori is the main street. There are quite a few hip-hop places, for example Voodoo Lounge has some nice live hip-hop, and Vibe is a club in the same building, also hip-hop. Most clubs cost ¥2000-3000, and stay open all night. An awesome afterhours spot is Safari, it gets going around 5am and plays hip-hop/r&b as well. The streets are packed pretty much all night.
to stay:
Khaosan Fukuoka International Hostel - clean, no curfew, cheap and there free internet. It is a bit of a walk from Hakata station (maybe 8 minutes) but is affordable and in Hakata. http://www.khaosan-fukuoka.com/
to see:
Maizuru Koen - best place to see the cherry blossom in Fukuoka.
Mt. Hiko - an amazing places, especially if you like nature and hiking. Beautiful in the snow at the top of the middle mountain (there are three total).
